The Story of the Conversion of Paul
Saul the persecutor meets the risen Jesus on the road to Damascus and is called to become Paul the apostle.
Setting and Context
Acts 9 turns the church's greatest human enemy into its most famous missionary. The conversion is not self-improvement; it is interruption by the risen Christ, who claims Saul and redirects his zeal toward the gospel.
The Story
Saul breathes out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples and seeks letters to Damascus. On the road, a light from heaven shines round about him, and he falls to the earth. A voice asks, "Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?"
Saul asks who speaks. The Lord answers, "I am Jesus whom thou persecutest." Saul is led blind into Damascus and waits. Ananias, though afraid, obeys the Lord's call to go to him.
Ananias lays hands on Saul, calling him brother. Sight returns, Saul is baptized, and straightway he preaches Christ in the synagogues. The hunter of the church becomes its witness.
Meaning and Importance
Saul travels to Damascus to arrest disciples when a light from heaven strikes him down. Jesus speaks, Saul is blinded, Ananias lays hands on him, and he is baptized. The persecutor becomes a preacher of the faith he once destroyed.
Paul's conversion shows that grace can reach the most hostile heart. Jesus identifies with His persecuted people, and calling comes as gift before achievement. The story also teaches the church to receive former enemies as brothers.
