Daniel lives as a faithful Jew in exile under foreign rule. Daniel 6 shows the pressure of public faith in a political system where loyalty to God can be treated as disloyalty to the state.
The Story
Daniel's integrity makes him respected by the king and hated by rivals. Since they cannot find corruption in his work, his enemies target his devotion to God. They persuade the king to sign a decree that makes Daniel's prayer illegal.
Daniel does not stage a performance, but neither does he hide his faith. He continues praying as he had done before. The law traps the king, and Daniel is thrown into the lions' den despite the king's regret.
God sends His angel and shuts the lions' mouths. Daniel is lifted out unharmed, and the king publicly acknowledges the living God. The story presents deliverance, but also the settled faithfulness Daniel showed before deliverance came.
