Setting and Context
1 Samuel 16 turns the monarchy toward David while Saul still reigns. God's choice overturns human ranking: the overlooked shepherd is chosen because the Lord looks on the heart.
The Story
The Lord tells Samuel to fill his horn with oil and go to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for He has provided a king among Jesse's sons. Samuel fears Saul, but God gives him a way to come under the cover of sacrifice.
Jesse's sons pass before Samuel. Eliab looks kingly, but the Lord refuses him: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart. One by one the others are set aside.
David is brought in from keeping the sheep. The Lord says, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. Samuel anoints David in the midst of his brethren, and the Spirit of the Lord comes upon David from that day forward.
Meaning and Importance
Saul is rejected as king. Samuel is sent to Jesse's house, passes over the older sons, and anoints David, the shepherd boy. The Spirit of the Lord comes upon David from that day forward.
David's anointing teaches that God's evaluation differs from human prestige. Calling may begin quietly in a family circle, yet it redirects a nation's future. The Spirit's coming marks the true center of the story.
