Setting and Context
All four Gospels record the feeding miracle. John places it near Passover and soon after connects the sign to Jesus' bread of life teaching, so the meal becomes a doorway into deeper trust.
The Story
A great multitude follows Jesus because of the signs He has done. Seeing the crowd, Jesus asks Philip where they can buy bread. Philip calculates the cost; Andrew notices a lad with five barley loaves and two small fishes, yet asks what they are among so many.
Jesus has the people sit down. He takes the loaves, gives thanks, and distributes them. The fish are shared likewise. Everyone eats as much as they want, and the leftovers fill twelve baskets.
The people respond by recognizing Jesus as the prophet who should come into the world. The miracle meets hunger in the moment and prepares the reader for Jesus' later claim to be the bread of life.

A large crowd follows Jesus. With five barley loaves and two fish, He feeds about five thousand men. Twelve baskets of fragments remain, and the sign points beyond bread to the One who gives life.
