The Story of Gideon
God calls hesitant Gideon to deliver Israel, reduces his army to three hundred, and wins the victory.
Setting and Context
Gideon's story belongs to the cycle of the judges: sin, oppression, crying out, and deliverance. God chooses an unlikely, fearful man and then strips away military advantage so the victory clearly belongs to the Lord.
The Story
Israel is impoverished by Midian. Gideon threshes wheat by the winepress when the angel of the Lord appears and calls him a mighty man of valour. Gideon protests his weakness, yet God promises to be with him.
Gideon asks for signs, including the fleece wet and dry. God answers. Then the Lord reduces the army from thousands to three hundred, lest Israel say its own hand saved it.
At night the three hundred break pitchers, raise lamps, blow trumpets, and shout. The Midianite camp panics and turns on itself. The Lord delivers Israel by a small band and a great fear He sends among their enemies.
Meaning and Importance
Midian oppresses Israel. The angel of the Lord calls Gideon. After signs with the fleece, God shrinks Gideon's army so Israel cannot boast. With trumpets, pitchers, and lamps, the Midianites are thrown into confusion and defeated.
Gideon teaches that God's strength is made known through weakness. Signs reassure a hesitant servant, but the reduced army teaches dependence. Victory is the Lord's, not the product of human numbers.
