The Story
Ahab asks Naboth for his vineyard to make a garden of herbs. Naboth refuses because the Lord forbids him to give away the inheritance of his fathers. Ahab returns heavy and displeased.
Jezebel mocks Ahab's kingship and writes letters in his name, proclaiming a fast and seating Naboth high among the people. False witnesses accuse him of blaspheming God and the king, and Naboth is stoned.
When Ahab goes down to take possession, the word of the Lord comes to Elijah. Elijah meets Ahab in the vineyard and announces judgment. Ahab humbles himself, and God delays the full disaster, yet the moral verdict stands.
Meaning and Importance
King Ahab wants Naboth's vineyard, but Naboth refuses to sell his inheritance. Jezebel arranges false witnesses and Naboth is stoned. Elijah confronts Ahab, and God pronounces judgment on the house of Ahab.
