Setting and Context

Nehemiah serves in the Persian court yet carries covenant grief for Jerusalem. The book joins prayer, planning, labor, and courage against enemies who try to stop the work.

The Story

Nehemiah hears that the remnant is in great affliction and the wall of Jerusalem is broken down. He sits down and weeps, fasting and praying to the God of heaven, confessing sin and pleading covenant mercy.

Before King Artaxerxes he appears sad, and God grants him favor. He is sent to Judah. By night he views the walls, then tells the people of God's hand upon him. They answer, Let us rise up and build.

Families repair sections of the wall. Sanballat and Tobiah mock and conspire. Nehemiah sets a watch, arms the workers, and refuses to come down from the work. The wall is finished in fifty and two days, and enemies perceive that the work was wrought of God.

Meaning and Importance

Hearing that Jerusalem's walls are broken down, Nehemiah fasts and prays. The king sends him. He inspects the ruins by night, rallies the people, and the wall is finished in fifty-two days despite mockery and threats.

Nehemiah's wall shows that rebuilding requires prayer and perseverance. God uses a cupbearer to restore a city's defenses and dignity. Opposition is real, but faith works with sword and trowel.
