The Story of Philip and the Ethiopian
Philip meets an Ethiopian official reading Isaiah, explains Jesus from the Scriptures, and baptizes him.
Setting and Context
Acts 8 shows the gospel crossing boundaries of geography and status. A court official from Ethiopia is reading Scripture yet needs a guide. The Spirit directs the encounter, and baptism follows clear confession of faith in Jesus.
The Story
Philip is told to go toward the south unto the way that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza. There he finds an Ethiopian eunuch of great authority under Candace, returning from worship in Jerusalem and reading Esaias the prophet.
The Spirit tells Philip to join the chariot. Philip asks whether the man understands what he reads. The eunuch invites him up, and beginning at the same scripture, Philip preaches unto him Jesus.
As they travel, they come to water. The eunuch asks what hinders baptism. He confesses faith in Jesus Christ, they go down into the water, and Philip baptizes him. The Spirit catches away Philip, and the eunuch goes on rejoicing.
Meaning and Importance
An angel sends Philip toward Gaza. He meets an Ethiopian eunuch reading Isaiah 53. Philip preaches Jesus from the passage, the eunuch believes, and they stop the chariot for baptism. The eunuch goes on his way rejoicing.
Philip and the Ethiopian show Scripture opened toward Christ, guidance by the Spirit, and baptism as the glad response of faith. The gospel is for distant nations and high officials as surely as for Jerusalem crowds.
