The Story of the Rich Young Ruler

Setting and Context
Mark 10 places this encounter amid teaching on discipleship and the kingdom. Moral seriousness is not enough when wealth holds the heart. What is impossible with men is possible with God.
The Story
As Jesus goes forth, a man comes running, kneels, and asks, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? Jesus points him to the commandments. The man says he has kept them from his youth.
Jesus looking upon him loves him and says one thing he lacks: go sell whatsoever thou hast, give to the poor, and take up the cross and follow. The man is sad at that saying and goes away grieved, for he has great possessions.
Jesus tells the disciples how hard it is for them that trust in riches to enter the kingdom. They are astonished. Jesus answers that with men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.
Meaning and Importance
A man runs to Jesus asking what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus loves him and calls him to sell what he has, give to the poor, and follow. The man leaves sorrowful, for he has great possessions. Jesus teaches how hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom.
The rich young ruler shows that respectability can still refuse costly discipleship. Jesus' love does not cancel the call. Eternal life is gift and allegiance, not a checklist that leaves idols untouched.
