Setting and Context
John 2 opens Jesus' public ministry with a sign inside ordinary celebration. The miracle is not spectacle for its own sake; it reveals glory, invites faith, and shows that Jesus brings better wine than the feast already had.
The Story
Jesus, His mother, and His disciples are invited to a wedding in Cana of Galilee. When the wine fails, Mary tells Jesus they have no wine. He answers that His hour is not yet come, yet Mary tells the servants to do whatever He says.
Six stone waterpots stand nearby. Jesus tells the servants to fill them with water, then draw out and take it to the governor of the feast. What was water has become wine.
The ruler of the feast tastes it and marvels that the best wine has been kept until now. John says this beginning of miracles manifested Jesus' glory, and His disciples believed on Him.
Meaning and Importance
When the wine runs out at a wedding feast, Mary tells Jesus of the need. He has servants fill jars with water, which becomes wine. The disciples believe, and John calls this the beginning of signs.
