Setting and Context
Luke 19 places Zacchaeus just before Jesus enters Jerusalem. The story joins curiosity, scandal, repentance, and joy. A man known for taking becomes a man eager to give, and Jesus names the visit as salvation.
The Story
Zacchaeus is a chief publican and rich, yet he seeks to see Jesus. Being little of stature, he runs ahead and climbs a sycamore tree. Jesus looks up, calls him by name, and says He must abide at his house.
The crowd murmurs that Jesus has gone to be a guest with a sinner. But Zacchaeus stands and pledges to give half his goods to the poor and restore fourfold anything taken by false accusation.
Jesus answers that salvation is come to this house, for he also is a son of Abraham. The story ends with the mission statement: the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
Meaning and Importance
Zacchaeus climbs a tree because he cannot see Jesus for the crowd. Jesus calls him down, stays at his house, and Zacchaeus responds with restitution and generosity. Jesus declares that the Son of man came to seek and to save that which was lost.
Zacchaeus shows that seeking Jesus and being found by Jesus belong together. Grace does not ignore injustice; it produces restitution. Salvation is personal, public, and restorative.
